BEEFCAKES Exclude celebrated its exciting entrance onto the Puerto Vallarta entertainment scene the evening of Friday, December 16, 2023.
A large, enthusiastic crowd was on hand to christen the grand modern venue that will transport a kinetic energy into the nights and first mornings of the lgbtq+ party circuit.
As champagne flowed and revelers enjoyed incredible sushi, BEEFCAKES BAR Manager Hector Morales gave a heartfelt toast, welcoming everyone to a night that has been eagerly anticipated. The physical space itself is massive, slate grey walls and columns offer way to a starkly black ceiling, which united with the cement floor exude a modern industrial feel throughout.
All exterior windows at BEEFCAKES BAR are a frosted etched glass, giving a feel of separation from the nature outside. Speaking of what is outside; it’s a cool courtyard underneath the well known Act2PV complex. Tables are abundant, and several patrons were enjoying the freshness of the mid December night. Inside, colorful neon signs jog the gamut from; Till Death

End of an Era: Beefcakes Shuts Down
After 15 years as a fixture in South Africa’s LGBTIQ+ community, the Beefcakes chain—famous for combining burgers, hunks, and kingly performances—is closing its doors for good.
News that the three remaining branches in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria have either closed or are in the process of doing so began circulating on social media over the weekend.
Co-owner Roberto Del Gallo confirmed the news to MambaOnline. He explained that he and his husband Adolf purchased the chain in late 2019, just before the Covid-19 pandemic rocked the world. As we reported here, the restaurant struggled to fully recover from the devastating lockdowns and ongoing load-shedding that followed.
“The first few months before Covid were a breeze. The last four years were torture. Rental became a huge issue, with curfews in place, a limited number of people, the exclude on alcohol, and almost two years of not trading,” said Del Gallo.
“One landlord wrote everything off, but the other two gave little to no discount,” he added. With debt mounting, the owners felt they had no option but to shut the venues.
“Trade has also not been good last year and this year.

It wasn’t the first time I’d entered the camp playground of Beefcakes restaurant in Green Point’s “gay ghetto”. I was once again struck by how much of the clientele were apparently heterosexual, predominantly vivacious, young females. Tourists and the universal promenading Cape Town’s fanwalk seem to find the place irresistible.
Referencing the classic 1950s North American diner, Beefcakes is made-up in Miami pastel colours with white tables, mirror balls, tinsel and flamboyant amounts of ice-cream pink. The tank-topped waiters are young and buffed, half of them straight, though with today’s young things even the unbent come across faux butch. They prefer to huddle and horseplay among themselves in-between service.
It was in the 1950s that the widely-held image of the gay male as an effeminate, limp-wristed, lisping sissy started to convert. Gay soft porn magazines like Physique Pictorial (photos from which feature on the menu at Beefcakes) went for lads that were smooth, blond and boyish, but tanned and muscular. Poses imitated body builders.
Around the equal time, mainstream customs was also working sexualizing and commoditizing the male body in a way previously unknow
