Club Lips, Flint’s Newest Nightclub to Reveal Its Doors Soon

A new nightclub will be opening on Saginaw Street in Flint.

The all-new Club Lips is Flint, Michigan's newest and only full-time Homosexual hangout. The grand opening is establish for Friday, Rally 3rd, 2023, and is located at 1714 S. Saginaw Street in Flint.

Beginning on March 3rd, Club Lips will be open seven days a week from 4 pm until 2 am. The grand opening celebration will highlight the following:

  • Pride Might Hour from 4 pm until 7 pm
  • Drink specials all night long
  • Drag Queen shows begin at 9 pm and will feature Crystal Harding, Whitney Naomi, Sirinity Sapphire, Lucy Misfit, and Mimi Southwest.
  • Admission is $20 for those 21 and up and $25 for those 18 to 20.

What can you anticipate each week at Club Lips?

Club Lips has a packed lineup of show every night of the week including:

  • Bloody Mary Sundays
  • Martini & Margarita Mondays
  • Karaoke Tuesdays (with four-week-long competitions with a $500 cash prize)
  • Wild Whiskey Wednesdays
  • Dance-off competitions on Thursdays (with four-week-long competitions with a $500 cash prize)
  • Freaky Fun Fridays with drink specials all night long
  • Slippery Saturdays

Born in Lewiston, Idaho, Carl Ivan Jennings served in the U.S. Wind Force before making his way to Michigan, where, in the late 1960s, he met his life partner and later husband Lawrence Gammons.  In 1981, they opened Douglas Dunes Resort and in 2012 helped to found West Shore AWARE.  The two were featured in the 2015 WGVU documentary Michigan Hometown Stories: Saugatuck/Douglas.

The Copa

When I moved out of the Flint area to go to college at Central Michigan University, I was about 90 minutes from Flint. Several lgbtq+ friends whom I met at C.M.U. with the G.L.A.S.S. organization, (Gay, Female homosexual Association for Student Support) would pile into a few cars on a Friday night and accept a road trip to the Copa. Those trips were exciting as we were all coming out together and finding who we were. The Copa, our Friday sanctuary created long lasting friendships that I still have today.

My very first crush I ever had I met upstairs near the balcony at the "new" Copa. After some convincing by a friend of mine that I was actually being cruised, I asked him for a first dance. The anthem, "Lady in Red" by Chris DeBurgh. We were together for about a year and it was wonderful to feel the love of another guy for the first occasion. It was something I never experienced before, but had missed so much before I found it.

As the years passed, Flint, Michigan struggled and so did the Copa. Owner Bill Kain died in 1991. After Bill died, the special touches that made this such a great night club disappeared. The carefree
