Big Boys!

How involved are you with the gender non-conforming community in Aotearoa?

Tia: In the past, I've done some promo work for the Burnett Foundation Aotearoa Love Your Condom campaign, and in 2014 I was part of the First Touch (Gay Version) viral YouTube video. And then in 2020, I competed for Mr Gay Unused Zealand and I won Mr Congeniality. In 2024, I won Mr Bear New Zealand.

Morro: I’m not as active now, but I used to leave to a lot of the bear events. I also won Mr Bear New Zealand, and then went on to compete alongside the Australian states, and I ended up winning Mr Bear Australasia – both in 2017. After that, I made a lot of friends and met so many people from all over the world.

As an active group member, what are your thoughts on representation?

Tia: Ever since Aotearoa was colonised, being takatāpui was frowned-upon, not only by Western community, but among our own Māori communities as well. A lot of the mahi in breaking down that stigma, and de-colonising our people, is also connected to breaking down the stigma around having a bigger body – both as a Māori and as a queer person.

Now, lots of campaigns for the queer communit

The most common definition of a „bear” is a dude who is hairy, has facial hair, and a cuddly body. However, the word „Bear” means many things to different people, even within the bear movement. Many men who do not have one or all of these characteristics define themselves as bears, making the term a very loose one. Suffice it to say, „bear” is often defined as more of an attitude than anything else - a sense of comfort with our organic masculinity and bodies that is not slavish to the vogues of male attractiveness that is so common in gay circles and the culture at large.

Chaser

A chaser is generally an average-weight male who is attracted to stocky, chubby, fat or obese males. However, some of the latter also think about themselves as a chaser since it is quite frequent for either a stocky, chubby, plump or obese male to be attracted to the same.

Otter

A man who is hairy, but is not large or stocky - typically thinner, or with lean muscle. Also typically identified by an energetically playful and flirtatious style. Slimmer version of a Bear with little pockets of fat like affection handles or a tiny gut, but not as lean as a Wolf.

Historically, gay men have stigmatized other gay men for being ugly, being mature, having a small cock, or being fat. The shame of such stigma often forced some male lover men to keep a low profile or linger out of sight in the gay community. Who wants to be called an “old queen” or a “fat pig,” especially to their face?

Girth and Mirth predates the ascend of the new sex-positive gay bears by a decade. However, bears did not originate in the Girth and Mirth scene, as some academics contain alleged. In a 1999 interview with Ron Suresha, Reed Wilgoren recounts how his friend Charlie Brown had placed an ad in the Berkeley Barb (a beacon for queer voices in the 1970s) in 1976 called “Chubbies and Chasers, Unite!” The very positive response was overwhelming. This incentivized Charlie to found the first Girth and Mirth Club in San Francisco in 1976. This became a sex-positive, body-affirming, mutually supportive organized social group. The next year a Girth and Mirth chapter was stared in Boston, and then another chapter in New York City in 1978.
