‘This Book Is Gay’ Author Says America’s Teens Have Bigger Problems Than Her Book
Juno Dawson didn’t want to write This Book Is Gay.
Dawson, a U.K.-based author, had spent seven years as a sexual education and wellness teacher. But when she was approached in 2012 by her publisher to create a comprehensive guide to LGBTQ+ sex education, she tells Rolling Stone she was initially unsure about tackling such a massive project.
“To reach out to all the LGBTQ+ youth in the earth felt like a huge undertaking,” Dawson says. “Other than the fact that I had been a teacher, I didn’t touch that I was the optimal authority to be telling anybody about how to find a partner at that time when I was in my 20s—given that my love life was such a hot mess. But when I was a teenager, this would have answered so many questions. And I knew there was nothing like it. So I said yes.”
First published in 2014, Dawson’s how-to about gay relationships has develop a staple for sex ed classes. But as the movement by conservatives to prohibit data about LGBTQ+ topics in general schooling has taken hold
This Book Is Gay
I did NOT give this book two stars because I believe there is anything wrong with creature part of the LGBTQIA+/MOGAI community.
I gave it two stars because it claims to be inclusive but for the most part only covers issues that people who are gay/lesbian (and stick to binary genders and all the expectations society brings with them) acquire to deal with. I gave it two stars because I don't regard this book to be very inclusive, especially when it comes to genderfluid people and/or those who are not gay or womxn loving womxn (i.e. bi or pan or ace or ...).
So please refrain from commenting when all you intend to carry out is to propose I read queerantagonistic books. Don't enjoy this review. I'm not on your side, I don't agree with you and I honestly don't need your prejudices in my life.
What I liked.
It's an uplifting publication. One message repeated over and over again is: "Whoever you are, that's fine!" Plus, there are lots of sections especially fresh people might locate very useful - coming out, who to tell, how to tell, sex, STIs ... So, thumbs up for that.
The BUT. It's a very massive one.
'This Book Is Gay' Author Juno Dawson Takes On Book Banning
Juno Dawson’s This Book Is Gay is the ninth most banned book in America. In the near-decade since its 2014 publication, it has become a touchstone for readers seeking solace and education in the highly underrepresented area of LGBTQ+ sex education. The book was intended as an instruction manual for those not finding answers to questions about gender, sex, and sexuality.
“I felt as a former lecturer, sex education for Queer teenagers wasn’t very good,” Dawson explained in a heartfelt video posted to Instagram. “They weren’t really learning anything about guard in relationships.”
Dawson wrote the book to give pray to those who set up their journey rife with confusion instead of wonder and hope, and This Book Is Gay launch its audience, positively affected readers’ lives, and became a bestseller along the way. “This book is truly something I desire I had growing up when I was figuring out who I am,” said Corey Evans, in a Goodreads review. “It should be a must read for all teens so that they never have to feel alone; i
