Humanizing The Vacuum
I rented a lousy indie film called Dare a few weeks ago only because the DVD cover boasted an A. O. Scott rave and three steaming actors. “Lousy” because it skulks away from the situation it sets out to examine: three high schoolers, two of whom are in a drama class, confused enough about their sexuality to experiment with their feelings. The apex of the love triangle is played by Zach Gilford of “Friday Night Lights,” in a remarkable show. Playing a role born from heterosexual confusion and queer panic on the part of the filmmakers, Gilford is unaffected and affecting. Here is what I mean by pandering: Sandra Bernhard plays the Botoxed analyst who prods Gilford into admitting his sexual ambivalence. What is extraordinary is how Gilford rises to the occasion. With his halting delivery, casual way with obscenities, and suppressed menace, he reminded me of the Russell Crowe in L. A. Confidential. Because he can’t suppress his bulk, he comes closest to creating a brand-new screen archetype: a guy’s guy who turns into a suppliant when people he loves long something out of him. Gilford projects this without vanity or winking.
Why Zach Gilford Considers 'This Close' His Proudest TV Work Since 'Friday Night Lights' (Exclusive)
Zach Gilford steps outside the box in Sundance Now's new dramedy, This Close, an endearingly heartfelt and messy tale about two foremost friends and their complicated, imperfect love lives. But there's more to the six-episode series than just the latest in a prolonged line of shows chronicling the modern generation's struggles with adulthood. The two main characters, Kate and Michael, are deaf and are played by deaf actors Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman.
For Gilford, who portrays Kate's charming yet idling-in-life fiance Danny, the promise of entering into unfamiliar territory was intriguing and creatively fulfilling. "This was a very refreshing experience for me," Gilford tells ET. "I've been working in TV for a while. Some experiences have been great, some have been less than, and this was one of those [situations] where you're like, alright, this is why I adore this job."

Zach Gilford—Dare, Friday Overnight Lights—6/21/09
Zach Gilford is best known for playing QB1 Matt Saracen on NBC/DirectTV's Friday Night Lights, adapted for the petty screen by the main attraction film's director Peter Berg. Though he's soon to exit that series as a regular, Gilford has been carving out a big-screen career, first in the intriguing indie The Last Winter, and now in three 2009 releases: Dare, Post-Grad, and The River Why. In Dare, Gilford plays Johnny Drake, a high school scholar on a journey of vocational and sexual revelation. In San Francisco for Dare's Bay Area premiere at the Frameline festival, Gilford sat down with me at the Galleria Park Hotel to chat about the new instructions in his career.
Groucho: This movie deals with acting on the stage—and now you’re established in TV and movies—is that something you’d still enjoy to do?
Zach Gilford: Yeah. If I could identify a project or a play that I really loved, and would be excited about doing, morning after day after afternoon after day for several months, I’d be totally interested. I wouldn’t crave to do any piece a disservice by doing it for two weeks and t
Criminal Minds star Zach Gilford shows signs of recovery after severe allergic reaction
Criminal Minds: Evolution celebrity Zach Gilford ran errands in Los Angeles last Friday alongside his seven-year-old daughter Zeppelin Adele Gilford just four days after suffering a severe allergic reaction.
The Friday Nighttime Lights alum - turning 43 next month - appears to have made a miraculous recovery as the substantial swelling around his eyes was gone.
Last Monday, Zach shocked his 72K Instagram followers by posting pictures of what appeared to be angioedema, which can cause life-threatening anaphylaxis if swelling blocks the airways.
'Sooooo yesterday was fun,' Gilford captioned his Instastories on Tuesday.
'Good thing we wrapped @criminalminds [season 18 on December 12]. Thanks to all the nurses, doctors, and staff at @huntingtonhospital for coaxing my face back to normalcy... still a little ways to go.'
Luckily for the Illinois-born actor - who did not disclose his allergy - angioedema typically resolves within 24 hours of taking antibiotics, antihistamines, and corticosteroids.
