Note: This story about gay Bhutan consists of several parts. This first section is based on a recent tour of western Bhutan that my husband and I took in overdue 2019. We booked it online and were met at Paro airport with kind and watchful staff, guide Tashi and driver Dhendup (attired in traditional robes or ‘gho’.) of Windhorse Tours. All tourists entering Bhutan have to book a tour. We only had two people in our tour—ourselves. During our visit to this beautiful nation I interviewed two gay activists in the capital Thimphu city about entity gay in this culture. Their story is presented second here followed by other reports written a few years ago based on online interviews.

Bhutan Overland: A Same-sex attracted Travel Cultural Tour
Day 1: Arrival in Bangkok
Today you should arrive in Bangkok so as a group, we can take the flight to Paro on Day 2.
Day 2: Arrival in Bhutan
Our tour starts with a flight from Bangkok to Paro, Bhutan today.
The scenic flight from Bangkok to Paro suggestions a spectacular view of the Himalayan ranges. If you’re lucky, you may even see Mount Everest and other famous peaks appreciate Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Chomolhari.
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by our local hosts and enjoy sightseeing in the Paro valley. We open with Ta Dzong, a monastery/fortress that was later converted into the National Museum in 1967. A Dzong is a fortress-like structure that functions as a monastery. Inside the museum, you will find many antique paintings, carvings, statues, textiles, and jewelry. We’ll operate to the Rimpung Dzong which was built in the 17th century. This dzong is now the administrative center and school for the monks. In the afternoon, we’ll check into our charming small hotel nestled in the trees.
