Santo Domingo Event Parade

An annual celebration of queer performers and community in a cavalcade of vans, motorcycles and crowds on foot, singing, dancing, drinking, and cheering. Await dazzling drag queens, glittering costumes, enchanting performances and an absolutely electric atmosphere. You’ll also view vans and pick-up trucks packed to the roof with groups of lower-key members of the LGBTQ+ community, daring to see and be seen and just generally having a great time.

The parade kicks off near the Colonial Zone and winds to a park near the Malecón - a stone esplanade that follows the Rio Ozama river as it winds through the center of Santo Domingo. Once at the park, the parade transforms into a live melody concert featuring a stage surrounded by a constellation of little ‘kikis’.

Afterparties are hosted throughout the city. If you don’t get invited to a intimate afterparty first, stare out for one of the commercial ones - event companies like Draguealo and GAFlabs accept over night clubs for the darkness, for the local LGBTQ+ community to dance, drink and sing the bedtime away with pride.

To fill the vacuum of subversion, a series of groundbreaking parties are popping up around the country’s capital, challenging gender norms and infusing nightlife with a much needed dose of camp and rebellion.

“This kind of work, queer representation, parties; it all needs to happen in the DR.”

“We saw there were no spaces where people could be fucking queer,” says Carlos Rodríguez, the photographer and documentarian behind the anarchic Draguéalo parties. “There were too many rules in the scene. Gay bars that wouldn’t acknowledge drag queens. Lesbian bars that wouldn’t admit cis [gender] men. From tha
